Irish comedians and comedy fans alike are mourning the cancellation of Republic of Telly

We’ll always have Surelook!

Republic of Telly - Season 14 RTÉ RTÉ

IT’S BEEN A SAD day for Irish comedy with the announcement that RTÉ has cancelled sketch show Republic of Telly.

Spanning eight years and 15 seasons, the show lead to spin off Bridget and Eamon, and launched the Rubberbandits’ breakthrough video, Horse Outside.

Presenter Edwin Sammon told TheJournal.ie that “every show has its time” but he hopes that comedy on RTÉ continues “onwards and upwards”:

I just hope that RTÉ replaces it with something that really supports the up-and-coming talent that we have and give it a platform to be seen by a wider audience.

The news of the show’s cancellation has been greeted with sadness from its presenters old and new:

Its contributors:

And all the people who just enjoyed the few laughs of a Monday evening.

It’s a damn shame. Here’s a few things to remember, though…
